The Opening General Session features improv group Wavelength, who will set the stage for a productive, creative event using humor as a tool to get the learning juices flowing. This afternoon, Jahana Hayes, the 2016 National Teacher of the Year, talks this afternoon about how service learning empowers students by connecting them with their communities. Throughout the weekend, we're hosting a series of video segments on Facebook, including Q&A sessions and interviews with conference attendees, authors, and presenters. We're also going live! We'll host five Facebook Live sessions at facebook.com/ascd.org on Saturday (8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.) and Sunday (8:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.). Our second Learning Lab of the day has been updated to "The Habits of Mind—Today and Tomorrow," in the Hilton Anaheim, Level 2, Pacific Ballroom 1:00–2:45 p.m. This interactive session offers a deeper dive into the 16 habits, discussions around embedding the habits into your school and classroom routines, and a fun introduction to the engaging WonderGrove animated characters created to connect the lessons with students in preschool settings through third grade. What better way to learn strategies that work than from teachers who have used them to help their students achieve? After highlighting the National Teacher of the Year Saturday, we feature a State Teachers of the Year Panel on Sunday—8:00–9:30 a.m., ACC, Level 2, Room 204C—with five State Teacher of the Year award winners. Explore this and other practitioner-led sessions.
New this year, members of the ASCD Board want to hear from attendees directly and discuss the past, present, and future of ASCD. Stop by ACC, Level 2, Room 209A on Saturday and Sunday, 1:00–2:00 p.m. Later, ASCD members can visit Booth 972 in the Exhibit Hall to vote for two candidates to the ASCD Board.
