For your knowledge to have maximum effect, it can't be shared only in the faculty lounge, and it can't languish on a single website or dusty shelf. In this interactive, hands-on institute, you will learn about a variety of opportunities to share your strategies, research, or knowledge, including how to land those opportunities and strategies to maximize them in order to share your work with varied audiences. The course is split into three sections: laying the groundwork (introduction, branding, websites, social media, etc.), speaking (TED Talks, conferences, media interviews, NPR/radio, etc.), and writing (book deals, journals, magazines, etc.). Participants will also learn about resources available to women and traditionally underrepresented groups so that more diverse perspectives are represented in field dialogue. In addressing significant professional development issues (e.g., writing and speaking strategies), this institute will encourage more dynamic, memorable presentations and more accessible, widespread communication of education knowledge.

In school, students typically learn how to share information through descriptive and argumentative essay writing, but once they exit the K–12 system, they often need to know how to share information through data charts, advertisements, briefs, blogs, and other forms of writing. Real-world writing involves using the foundational skills and knowledge of writing to strategically communicate in situations beyond the classroom and in the workplace. Preparation for writing beyond school begins in K–12 with a focus on developing writing competencies that can be transferred to any work, career, or post–high school environment. In this interactive institute, we will focus on guiding students to prepare for writing beyond school by knowing the purpose for writing; using models to teach audience; identifying appropriate language; finding appropriate and suitable evidence; and practicing editing, reviewing, and fine-tuning. Participants will engage in activities that incorporate guide-sheets, tools, and rubrics for use in the classroom.

We know the transformative power of educators, particularly teachers, to improve the life chances of children and youth who live in poverty. What sets these educators apart from others is not only attending to what and how they teach, but also to who they are (what they believe and value) and why they became educators in the first place. In this institute, the presenters will share practical advice from their best-selling ASCD book Disrupting Poverty: Five Powerful Classroom Practices. Lesson's learned from nearly 40 successful educators, many of whom have lived in poverty, will provide insight into five practices that foster a supportive classroom culture and build resilience for all students, especially those who live in poverty. Participants will learn how to confront barriers to their success and leave the session inspired and equipped with tips, ideas, and strategies for disrupting poverty's adverse influence on lives and learning.

Change is hard. Sometimes, it seems nearly impossible. Yet change becomes more likely and more effective when we lead with relationships as the standard bearer. How do we prime ourselves to do this? By boosting our ability to cultivate and sustain strong relationships, and by using a series of leadership moves known as the Forces of Influence to help others to be as successful as they can be. During the course of our time together, we'll explore the basics of relationships; dive into the pushes, pulls, shoves, and nudges that make up the Forces of Influence; and challenge ourselves to use the forces as a self-assessment tool and as a springboard to learning for all.

Developing students' social and emotional learning (SEL) requires much more than an "SEL" program. Successful schools integrate SEL into everything they do, and such is the case in high-performing, high-poverty schools (HP/HP). Drawing from the second edition of their best-selling book Turning High-Poverty Schools into High-Performing Schools and their new study of 16 HP/HP schools, the presenters will share insight into how the practical strategies found in the Framework for Action seamlessly align with the 10 indicators of schoolwide SEL integration identified by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learnings (CASEL). Participants will learn how educators in HP/HP schools develop the collective efficacy required to fully integrate their efforts to improve academic, social, and emotional learning in high-poverty environments. They will leave equipped with tools and a road map for disrupting poverty's adverse influence not only on academic learning, but on social and emotional learning as well.
